The mission of Poetry Slam, Inc. (PSi) is to promote the creation and performance of poetry that engages communities and provides a platform for voices to be heard beyond social, cultural, political, and economic barriers.
Our vision is a world where all persons have the ability to express themselves creatively through poetry using the power of voice.
Poetry Slam, Inc. was officially founded as a 501(c)3 in 1997. As an official tax-exempt organization, works every day to provide avenues for voices to be heard. When you support PSi, you are a part of our story and theirs, bringing the best of performance poetry to audiences all over the world. You are critical to our efforts to provide a space for poets to grow, to be heard, and to be inspired. You can be a part of this vibrant network of artists by supporting one of the most inclusive arts organizations in the country.
Together, with the support of our members, we have grown to reach millions of people with poetry on our YouTube channel and thousands of people with our local certified poetry slams as well as our annual events. PSi works year-round to bring the National Poetry Slam, the Individual World Poetry Slam, and the Women of the World Poetry Slam, offering poetry to the people, for the people, by the people. With a gold-star rating on Guidestar, you can feel confident that your gift to Poetry Slam, Inc. is being used well as we continue to grow.
While our primary programs are the National Poetry Slam, the Women of the World Poetry Slam, and the Individual World Poetry Slam, Poetry Slam, Inc. is also the official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization charged with overseeing the international coalition of poetry slams. There are over 100 certified poetry slams, actively hosting events year round throughout North America. Though slams are maintained in a growing number of cities by local organizers, they are certified by PSi as a commitment to the community of slams that adhere to the vision slam’s founders established for the art form. Because of slam’s exponential growth as an art form, PSi has emerged not only as an administrative body to maintain the rules which govern slam, but as an organization that seeks to grow slam’s audience and protect slam’s interests with the support of our membership body.
The Executive Council, headed by a seven-member Executive Council comprised of poets and slam organizers, and voted on by representatives of local slams, serves as our volunteer Board of Directors. Their work is to support the organization, ensuring that slam maintains itself as an art form open to all competitors. Through the certification process and its annual organizational meetings, PSi has created the backbone for a community of poets who are in frequent communication with one another. Poets from the community frequently embark on poetry tours in other slam cities, relying on each other to set up the venues and housing necessary for such tours.
