The 2017 Individual World Poetry Slam is a wrap!

The 2017 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion is Arvind Nandakumar!

Arvind Nandakumar (he/him) is an Indian-something immigrant who has lived in Canada, Australia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and the US. He is currently at UC Berkeley studying Microbial Biology. Arvind is a child of Forward Arts located in Baton Rouge Louisiana, and has competed at the International Brave New Voices Festival in 2015 (Representing Baton Rouge), and the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational in 2016 (representing UC Berkeley). His work tackles issues of mental health and focuses on his lived experiences as a poet of color on the autism spectrum.

Arvind Nandakumar made it into #iWPS2017 by being the runner-up in the Last Chance Slam, and made his way all the way to finals! Finals was an incredible show, with Arvind Nandakumar and Anthony McPherson tying in the third round and heading into a tie-breaker, where they tied AGAIN! It was a magnificent show, and Arvind emerged the new Individual World Poetry Slam Champion!

Anthony McPherson resides in New York City. His biracial poetry intertwines various art forms, as well as a myriad of character impressions. He ranked 13th at the Individual World Poetry Slam in 2015, and garnered the attention of Button Poetry, Huffington Post and Upworthy. You can see him perform in an upcoming Lions Gate film (title to be announced). He is a Nuyorican Grand Slam poet, and an Urban Word alum. Anthony represents those who left home far behind to make it, and those who will go far enough to find themselves – their best selves.
