We are so excited to kick off our first event of 2017 in Dallas, Texas!
Every year, 96 women travel from around the U.S., Canada, and overseas to descend upon one city to battle for the title of Women of the World Slam Poetry Champion. In 2017, Dallas, Texas has been selected to host the Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWps) in its tenth year. The event is scheduled to be held March 15-18, 2017.
Dallas has one of the most thriving slam poetry scenes in the nation, and is home to many incredible poets!
The Women of the World Poetry Slam is a four day poetry festival, in which 96 of the best female-identified poets in slam will compete against each other in order to crown the Women of the World Poetry Slam champion. In this event, poets compete in preliminary competitions (referred to as “bouts”) over two nights. The 14 poets with the top scores from those days move on to Finals, where one poet is crowned the champion!
In addition to the competition, each day of the festival features poetry workshops, themed open mics, special nighttime events, and parties. Competition at WOWps is limited to poets who live their lives as women, which includes female assigned or identified individuals who are 18+ or 21+ years of age (depending on the Host City). This includes gender non-conforming individuals.
Previous winners include Andrea Gibson (2008), Rachel McKibbens (2009), Eboni Hogan (2010), Theresa Davis (2011), Dominique Christina (2012 & 2014), Denice Frohman (2013), Janae Johnson (2015), and our reigning co-Champions of 2016, Imani Cezanne and Emi Mahmoud.
Dallas is the 9th largest city in the US, and the Dallas Arts District is the largest urban arts district in the United States. We are THRILLED to become a part of the thriving arts scene with this event! To learn more about how to participate, partner with us, or buy tickets, visit our website!
